Students currently enrolled in a Health Sciences Program at BRCC are eligible for college credit if they hold current certifications in any of the trainings listed below. To request college credit, students should email pictures of current certifications to Registrar@brcc.edu.
American Red Cross
Students who hold current certifications by the American Red Cross may be eligible for credit for prior learning as stated below.
CPR/AED and Community First Aid and Safety
Students who can document current certification in American Red Cross Certification in Adult, Child and Baby First Aid/CPR/AED may receive credit for HLT 199, Supervised Study (1 credit).
Lifeguard Training
Students who can document current certification in American Red Cross Adult, Child and Baby First Aid/CPR/AED and in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification will receive credit for PED 245, Lifeguard Training (2 credits).
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Certifications
Students enrolled in Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Career Studies Certificate, Paramedic Certificate, and/or Emergency Medical Services Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree plan may be awarded credit based on acceptable proof of current certification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) at the appropriate level. Programs such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate or other partial programs may be awarded credit at the discretion of the program administration and reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must complete at least 25% of their degree requirements at BRCC (up to 75% of graduation requirements can be awarded through credit for prior learning).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Students with a current ACLS Provider or Instructor Certification from the American Heart Association may receive credit for EMS 165
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
Students with a current AEMT Certification may receive credit for EMS 111, 120, 170, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, and 186.
Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)
Students with a current AMLS Provider or Instructor Certification may receive credit for EMS 164
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
Students with a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certification may receive credit for EMS 100.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Students with a current EMT Certification may receive credit for EMS 111 and 120
Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC)
Students with a current EPC Provider or Instructor Certification may receive credit for EMS 167
Paramedic
Students with a current Paramedic Certification may receive credit for EMS 111, 120, 123, 170, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 210, 212, 216, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 241, 246, and 249.
Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
Students with a current PHTLS Provider or Instructor Certification may receive credit for EMS 163
Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Nursing
BRCC Students who possess a current license or certification administered by the Virginia Department of Health Professions Board of Nursing are eligible for Credit for Prior Learning as stated below.
Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
Students currently enrolled in the Certified Nurse Aide Bridge Career Studies Certificate who intend to apply to the BRCC’s Nursing Program may receive credit for prior learning if they have a current certification in Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) may receive credit for HCT 101, Health Care Technician I (3 credits) and HCT 102, Health Care Technician II (3 credits).

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
LPN students must apply for admission to the clinical component of the program and document completion of all regular admission criteria (including submission of an official transcript from their LPN program and a copy of their current Virginia unrestricted LPN license). Students that have been accepted into BRCC’s Nursing Program with a current Virginia unrestricted licensure as a practical nurse (LPN) will receive credit for NSG 100, 106, 130, 152, and 170. LPN’s receiving prior learning credit will still be required to take NSG 115 (4 credits) and NSG 200 (3 Credits).
