If you are under the age of 24 and indicated you are financially self-sufficient on the Blue Ridge Community College Application for Admission, the application automatically placed a registration hold on your account. The Code of Virginia requires all students under the age of 24 to prove self-sufficiency through clear and convincing evidence before registering for classes at the in-state tuition rate.
Students are not considered “financially self-sufficient” if 50% or more of their expenses are/were covered by a parent or legal guardian within the last 12 months. If the student lives with a parent or legal guardian and does not pay rent to live there, they are not self-sufficient and are considered a “qualifying child” or “qualifying relative” according to the IRS definition.

How do I get my hold removed so I can register for classes?
Please review and follow the procedures for the option that best describes your situation.

You may be eligible for an exception to the Code of Virginia § 23.1-501 Presumption of dependency for certain students. If you qualify for one of the exceptions listed below, follow the instructions to easily have your registration hold removed. Cell phone pictures of documents are accepted as long as they are legible. Documents listed below can be submitted securely through DropSecure or dropped off in person at the Welcome Desk in Houff Student Center.
I am a Veteran or an Active Duty member of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Submit a copy of your active duty orders or your DD-214 (Member 4 Copy)
I am currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.
- Submit a copy of your unofficial transcript showing current enrollment
I am married.
- Submit a copy of your marriage license
I am a Ward of the Court or I was a Ward of the Court until age 18.
- Submit a copy of your Ward of the Court official documents
I have no adoptive parent or legal guardian and both of my parents are deceased.
- Submit a copy of your parents’ obituary or death certificate(s)
I have a legal dependent (child/children).

Students wishing to claim VA Domicile through a parent or legal guardian must have the completed Parent or Legal Guardian Form – PDF (requires Acrobat Reader) as well as three supporting documents from the Parent Document List – PDF (requires Acrobat Reader) submitted to Student Records before the first day of the upcoming semester. Cell phone pictures are accepted as long as they are legible. Documents can be submitted securely through DropSecure or dropped off in person at the Welcome Desk in Houff Student Center.
