When severe weather or emergencies (snow, ice, flooding, power failures) require the College to be closed, notification will be made through announcements by local radio, television stations, and the College’s switchboard. In the absence of any announcement, the College is open and students are expected to be in attendance.
Since the College serves a large geographic area, students are expected to exercise their own judgment when hazardous conditions exist in their own areas. In the event that a student must miss a class for weather-related or emergency conditions, the student is obligated to notify the instructor as soon as possible and arrange for appropriate make-up work.
When the College delays opening due to inclement weather, classes will resume during their regular time periods. For instance, if the College delays opening until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the 11:00 a.m. classes will meet, followed by others in their regularly scheduled time periods.
Aviation Maintenance Technology Program
Please note that closing and delay announcements for Blue Ridge Community College that are broadcast on local media and through various BRCC communication methods DO NOT APPLY to students enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program housed at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.
Decisions concerning inclement weather for AMT students are determined by the faculty program head. If the faculty member decides to delay or cancel AMT classes, announcements related to that decision will be made through email and Canvas Announcements directly to the students enrolled in the program. In the absence of such an announcement, students are expected to be in attendance, as is required by FAA regulations.
The purpose of this policy is educational due to the nature of the profession. The FAA has strict attendance regulations because they firmly believe that learning the skills required in the profession requires attendance at classes devoted to instructing you in those skills. Furthermore, at airports across the country, during inclement weather events, aviation mechanics are typically required to be in attendance.
Since students enrolled in the AMT program commute from a large geographic area, students are expected to exercise their own judgment when hazardous conditions exist in their own areas. In the event that a student must miss a class for weather-related or emergency conditions, the student is obligated to notify the instructor as soon as possible and arrange for appropriate make-up work. Furthermore, the missed class time does count against the maximum allowed absentee time that the FAA regulations allow for in AMT programs.
